If someone had told me when I joined the BMA over 13 years ago that one day I would be writing a blog about doctors taking industrial action (over anything) then I might have feared for their mental health. After all, doctors are hardly known for their militancy, and yet here we are.
Amid all the media comment, government propaganda and the astonishment of most people, let us take a moment to consider quite how badly the government must have treated the profession for tens of thousands of doctors to say they are willing to take industrial action.
BMA members have issued their trade union with a clear mandate to challenge the government’s unfair and unnecessary changes to pensions through industrial action. A turn-out of 50% with around two thirds of doctors in each of the largest branches of practice in favour tells you all you need to know about the level of anger at the current situation.
You will not hear any triumphalism in this column, nor from the BMA or its members – let’s be clear, this is a very sad day. Doctors don’t enter medicine to take industrial action; they do so to help their patients. They are taking action very reluctantly and as a last resort.
Doctors haven’t taken any form of industrial action for nearly 40 years and the decision to do so must have been an unbelievably difficult one to take for a professional group so committed to their patients. However, you can only push people so far.
Certain sections of the media seem to think that ‘greedy doctors’ should simply roll over and accept anything that is thrown at them, so well are they paid. But doctors have never asked for better treatment, just fair treatment. How can it be fair that a doctor will have to pay twice as much as a civil servant on the same salary, for the same pension? How can it be fair that a doctor will have to work until the age of 68 when a member of the police or fire service will be able to retire with a full pension at the age of 60?
Several disingenuous comments have been made in the media. These must be challenged:
- Doctors are not going on strike. They will be in their usual workplaces, but providing urgent and emergency care only, on 21 June. That means that any patient who needs urgent treatment will be treated.
- The BMA did not agree to the “proposed final offer” – we agreed to consult members, which we did. The same applies to all other health sector trade unions.
- The BMA attended all of the ‘scheme specific discussions’ that took place prior to the final offer being made on 21 December 2011. The government refused to describe those meetings as ’negotiations’ at the time but is now attempting to do so retrospectively.
The message from doctors to the government is very clear: We feel so let down that we are willing to take a step we haven’t taken since 1975. There is still time for you to sit down and negotiate with us in good faith for a fair deal.
Not to mention the current £2bn annual surplus, and the fact that patients will still be getting better care than they did / will for royal weddings and jubilee holidays. Strange how we don’t hear the public complaining about cancelled operations when they’re getting a day off work.

I am very disappointed that the doctors pension scandal has been so poorly represented in the national press. I have dedicated my working life to easing the suffering of those most vulnerable when the nation had been tucked up in their beds.
I work for a public body and 15% of my gross salary is unpensionable. As a junior doctor 40% of my income was below the minimum wage and yes… Unpensionable. I will be on call and expected to be working out of hours caring for those that need it until retirement at 65 and I am sorry for admitting to it, but I do not think that appropriate and fair remuneration with a fair pension doing this work is an insult to the public pocket.
It will be a lot cheaper than a return to the dark days of healthcare pre-1948.
If they want to move the goalposts and steal from public servants then fine. But I would appreciate the back pay for the discount labour that the nation has taken from me.
I might not be so angry about the bullying hectoring tones of a prime minister and his fawning deputy who are in all but name…thieves.

I hope the BMA will be fighting the PR war by correcting some of the over-inflated figures that the DOH and Andrew Lansley seems to be peddling around re : the pensions we can expect under the new system. I keep seeing figures quoted that a new doctor joining the revised scheme can expect to retire on £ 68000 a year. Who is peddling this nonsense and will the BMA refute these figures in the press ?

I am sad to see how some politicians and members of the media have been misrepresenting the pensions debate and doctors as a profession. I feel the BMA should take steps to get our side of the story across the the public.
Consultants and GPs are relatively well paid, but we make a net contribution to the treasury with our current pension payments. So they have earnt and paid for the pensions they get. As a foundation doctor I graduated with over £20,000 of debt and currently don’t feel well paid or like I’m getting a good deal. Like many of my colleagues I’m now considering alternatives including emmigration and leaving the NHS in the future.
In addition, I don’t feel the proposed strike action goes far enough. The GPs shut for 2 days for the Jubilee, and a certain Royal Wedding. We are only having one day of action were we will all still be at work and treating urgent cases.

Our Communications department could not reasonably do any more to get our side of the story over, but of course one thing that they cannot do is to force the media to represent those facts.
The sad fact of the matter is that “Fat cat doctors get £68,000 pensions” is a headline that sells papers, whilst “Cost sharing agreement caps tax payer contribution” is not.

Dear Collegues,
I voted for strike action on Thursday 21st I am very concerned about our pensions . I have said to my trust that I will be on strike that day and will forgo my pay for that day but I will sill turn and volunteer to do my two clinics to avoid compromise to patient care. I will however be wearing a shirt with the following printed on it and will have a notice on the door to my clinic along the lines below.

I have asked my trust if this is legal within uniform policy. If they do not like it then they have the option of asking me not to turn up- but they will need to justify why they chose to compromise patient care when I volunteered to work for free.
This is one strike where working unpaid and making sure the public knows it may have much greater impact than not working. We will show what doctors are really about and not how some may wish to portray us. We should consider this approach nationwide otherwise we will only loose public support. For this to work we need m majority of doctors to get involved and for widespread publicity for this stance.
I hope the BMA can take this up as an option and disseminate widely as we need to do this together.

I am a GP. I have been through the main information the BMA has online. I need two sentences to put on a blown up piece of paper in our reception room. I can use the stuff about reforms in 2008, having to work longer, having to pay more. What I do not fully understand is: where is the extra money the doctors will be paying going to? Are the Treasury using it for some other purpose? Are doctors in effect paying for something else? It would help me to know that. Thanks, and good luck.

that I was going to write a review last year when you cleaned the rental property we were moving out of and didn’t. The technicians cleaned the carpet and it looked like new. When we moved in there were stains and paint on the carpet and the agent had them cleaned again with her company but they were still there when we moved in. Well, they weren’t there when we moved out, it looked like we had replaced the carpet.So why write a review now? We moved into our new house just short of a year ago and with the new house we increased our family with new puppies. I was very diligent about green machining and cleaning the spots but I knew that I was only getting the top half of the carpet. The tenet moved out of my rental property without telling me and left a great mess including stains in my 6 mo old carpet. I called Monster Clean and scheduled them to come out. Of course on the day of, the power had been turned off even though it was supposed to be transferred into my name when the tenant closed their account. I called Monster Clean to let them know the situation and reschedule to another time. Jim suggested I keep him informed of the power situation and let me know that they would still come if it was cut on shortly – he even called me to check a couple of times. When I was still in the dark after an hour, he called one of his trucks with a generator to come out. This was the Friday afternoon before Opsail/harbor fest so I’m sure the guys were looking forward to getting an early start on the weekend. Long behold – TWO trucks showed up just after 4:00 and banged the job out in less than an hour! The guys all had a GREAT attitude and did an awesome job! I will be recommending Monster Clean to anyone I hear needs a carpet job. They will definitely be the first ones I call from now on!

I am an economist working outside of medicine and was looking on Google for the facts, rather than government propaganda, about the proposed changes to Doctors Pensions and was steered towards this blog. I did take a look around the website but have not found anything meaty. Perhaps you could steer me towards something.
I must say I have been absolutely shocked looking at papers like the Daily Telegraph at the aggrieved anti medic comments below the articles. The government has been very successful in it’s “Marginalise and then Brutalise” campaign. Lucky for the doctors Jimmy Carr has provided a new and fresh target!
As someone in the private sector working for a large company, I would like to share what has been happening to us. Companies no longer feel able to take the financial risk and uncertainty of final salary pension schemes. These have have been firstly closed to new members who have been switched to money purchase pensions where the employee bears ALL the investment risk. The employer contribution has then been about 10% whereas for the final salary scheme they would be having to stump up 30% plus to finance the 2/3 final salary promise in a environment of poor investment returns.
Second the company shuts scheme to existing members so the benefits accrued to date are frozen, and further funds go into a money purchase scheme. All this is done without any consultation and imposed.
In that sense the public sector’s experience is totally different to the private sector and the final salary schemes have almost wholly been maintained.
I think one is right to resist a denigration of terms of conditions of employment, but in my experience I think it is almost certainly the case that contributions would have to be WAY higher than their current rate to support any final salary scheme though it’s actuarial lifetime. Citing a cash flow surplus this year of a few billion is not evidence that the scheme is sustainable as I read that with a bulge of retiring doctors in the next few years the fund will soon swing into cash flow negative ( there is no surplus in the classic pensionfund sense as it is an unfunded scheme – ie no managed pension pot)
And the one thing no-one in the private sector can ever dream of is a index linked pension. That is a MASSIVE potential liability for the employer. If continued rounds of bank of england Quantitative Easing up with run-away inflation(I and many other believe this to be the case), wages will lag prices and hence an unfunded scheme will end up in huge deficit. The inflation proofing is undervalued by members as a benefit, purely because inflation has been low for so long. It is a mistake to extrapolate that forward.
If the doctors and public workers want to target one benefit they though draw a line in the sand in front of, or indeed a very deep trench full of tank traps, it is that uncapped inflation proofing. Good luck.
